It's absolutely ESSENTIAL to update your mods because even if the game will start with them, some unupdated mods, especially after the last patch for Discover University, have been shown to corrupt entire save files - if you save the game with those mods in, you can lose your whole save which is not a pleasant experience.
Once again, depending on how long you were away, most script mods will probably be broken, so update them first!! Mods, again: keep a back up, but be VERY careful with adding them back in! If that one is a white paper too, there is definitely something more deeply wrong with the game, probably in its installation. that shortcut is definitely broken, so delete it and create a new one for the game.
You can try the 50/50 method with both mods and cc. Usually most script mods will have broken especially if you haven't updated any of them in such a long while, so if you can't find updated versions, you're better off just deleting them as they can have huge effects on your game and permanent ones on your save files.ĬC aren't exempt from breaking either.

Go and look for updates for every mod that you have, especially script mods, and if there are no updates available of them, you can look at the comments sections of the mods or any info you can find on them that may tell you whether they're still working. If it still won't start, you may want to try to repair the game via Origin (right click the game in your library, and click repair). If it starts, yay!
